The Intelligent Enneagram was first published in 1966 and has been recognised by many as the best book on the subject written so far. This is a revised and updated version with additional material. The book title reflects the idea that the enneagram originated from insights into how things work and the possibilities for intelligence in action. It covers a wide range of illustrative material from drama to technology, from prayer to movies, from sex to the workings of restaurants and many other fields of human activity. It deals with the simplest act and the span of history.
The book is based on the writings of Gurdjieff and his pupils, especially including John Bennett. It addresses practical wisdom and how we can do intelligent work. It shows how knowledge turns into understanding through work. ‘The Work’ is not blind effort but intelligent realisation.

The enneagram was introduced to the west in the early decades of the 20th century through the teaching of the great spiritual materialist George Gurdjieff. As a static design the enneagram possesses an attractive symmetry. But this design is just a snapshot, if you will -- or more accurately a mapping of a powerful type of intentional process onto two dimensions. The enneagram in fact designates a species of activity, no less than does Newton's static formulation F = ma.Gurdjieff and some of his direct students wrote tantalizingly about the remarkable properties and uses of the enneagram. To my knowledge the first book devoted entirely to the enneagram was Blake's collection of John G. Bennett's materials, published in 1983 as "Enneagram Studies." Thereafter the enneagram became more widely known through its application to an American writer's typology of personalities. With this 1996 publication, "The Intelligent Enneagram," Blake wrote his own book on the subject, and what a book it is.
One quickly discovers the pleasures of encountering Blake's searching and disciplined intellect. Yet the book is more an artist's manual than a pedagogue's treatise. It was practiced before it was written down. "The Intelligent Enneagram" translates lucidly the essence of Gurdjieff's concepts and methods into the matrix of Western (post-Descartian/Newtonian) thought without for a moment losing sight of the fact that the deeper truths of the enneagram are transformational and that transformation cannot be achieved by intellect alone.
With the example of John Bennett to inspire him, Blake has been able to achieve something uncommon for one with such incisive analytical gifts: namely, to write from an intelligence rooted outside personality. Those interested in penetrating beyond the constraints of their verbal story boards will, I believe, recognize in Mr. Blake one who has risked much to come closer to such a mode of being. The result is a brilliant book full of uncommon wisdom. A lifetime of learning shared. Hands down, this is the most stimulating work on the enneagram ever written -- and perhaps ever likely to be written.

This is the most complete book on the enneagram available currently. Tony Blake not only explains how the enneagram is put together but also elucidate the key teachings of Gurdjieff that is brought forward regarding the enneagram. The author remains true to the origin of the original teachings but takes it a bit further in offering a deeper understanding into the working of the enneagram. The principles behind the enneagram is explained by clear diagrams that helps to visualize some of the basic rules encapsulated within this esoteric symbol which Gurdjieff said is the philosopher's stone. The first part of the book deals with the theory of the enneagram while the latter part applies the theory to several case studies to make the theory more practical. The author draws from a wide experience base with many reference material cited for further reading. The book might be hard to read for people without any prior knowledge of the enneagram. I would recommend to read the book Enneagram Studies by JG Bennett first before reading this marvelous volume of intelligence.
Awesome wisdom from a powerful Gurdjieff teacher.
Anthony Blake is one of the foremost scholars and teachers in the Fourth Way tradition and this book is the most comprehensive study of the enneagram available in English. Blake is a second generation student in the Gurdjieff tradition and studied with John Bennett for many years. He went on to edit many of Bennett's books. He has a life time of experience working with the enneagram, the movements and all aspects of the Gurdjieff tradition. For anyone who is trying to work with or understand the enneagram this is a must read. His many books and his spoken word CD are essential tools for understanding the Fourth Way as it moves into the 21th century. This is not just a review or remembrance but a detailed analysis of how to use the enneagram as a tool for transformation.
